The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs
The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race is known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate duration, and is also called "The Run for the Roses" for the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in the US and typically draws around 155,000 fans. It is the oldest organized sporting event of any kind in the South, and the second oldest in the entire nation. For more information, visit the web site at: www.ChurchillDowns.com.
The Hillbilly Outfield Kentucky Derby Party
The Hillbilly Outfield is a huge Kentucky Derby party thrown by Jim Hafendorfer (of Middletown, KY) and the rest of the coalition members in the spirit of and during the weekend of the actual Kentucky Derby. The Hillbilly Outfield consists of an entire weekend overflow of free drinks, food, live music, audio and video Derby coverage, games, maybe even a dip in the pool, and more, with the purchase of a wristband. Most importantly, however, the driving motivation behind the event is to acquire funding for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through ticket sales, donations, the silent auction, etc., making dreams come true for the children in our area.
